CHARACTERISTICS – Prunus avium is a popular hedge shrub with green foliage that turns yellow and red in autumn, with white flowers in Spring and red wild cherries in summer.
HEIGHT AND SPREAD – Supplied in their dormant state, Berberis grows at 1-2ft per year and can reach up to 30 feet in 10 years, but it can be pruned to a relatively low form if required.
PLANTING TIPS – Bare-Root hedging is typically planted in a double staggered row of 5 plants per metre. Evergreen plants are generally planted to less density than deciduous plants, such is the nature of their dense foliage.

Prunus avium, also commonly known as ‘Wild Cherry’, is a popular hedge shrub considered to be one of the most ornamental hedge species. This versatile hedge shrub is perfect for inclusion in hedging schemes, or it can be allowed to grow as a hedgerow tree. The new leaves and masses of white flowers appear at the same time in spring followed by small, red wild cherries in summer. The green foliage turns yellow and red in autumn before falling off.

The Wild Cherry shrub grows best in full sun. Plant in moist fertile loamy, sandy or clay soils. It will grow well in most garden or parkland areas and can grow up to 30-40 cm per year. Prune back in winter when dormant and ideally only lightly prune back any dead wood and branches.
