Acer Palmatum Metamorphosa

Acer palmatum Metamorphosa is an vivid variety of Japanese Maple with graceful foliage that changes colour dramatically from Spring through to Autumn. It’s easy to see how this variety got the name Metamorphosa as it passes through so many hues throughout the year. The deciduous shrub sprouts yellow palmate leaves that are edged with pink in Spring. These morph to a bright green with white edges as the season goes on before turning orange-red and finally red-violet as Autumn descends.

Its compact size makes this variety of Acer ideal for growing in pots, patios or small gardens. Japanese Maples prefers full sun or partial shade and to be sheltered from strong winds. They grow well in soil that is chalky, loamy, clay or sandy, and you should ensure the soil is kept moist but well drained. If necessary, add drainage holes to pots to help prevent root rot.

Acer trees are generally low maintenance and don’t demand much attention to thrive. Once you’ve found the right spot for your Japanese Maple, all you need to do is water it regularly during dry weather. As Acers have a naturally elegant shape, no pruning is required other than to remove dead or damaged parts of the plant.
